Köler 200: Interpretations

8 March 2026 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Köler, the first professional painter of Estonian descent. An artist from Viljandi County, he studied at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts and visited Europe’s art centres, where he acquired new professional skills and broadened his world-view. In the second half of the 19th century, the Estonian national movement gained momentum, and Köler – who came from a peasant background – emerged as one of its leading figures in St Petersburg. Several of Johann Köler’s most renowned works are on display in Kumu’s permanent exhibition Landscapes of Identity.

Viljandi town and County also marked the artist’s 200th birthday with a great celebration. The present exhibition is an expanded development of the display previously shown at Viljandi’s Rüki Gallery, where five contemporary artists offered modern interpretations of Köler’s oeuvre. Mihkel Ilus is interested in how the artist’s touch and legacy have been passed on through materials. Jass Kaselaan explores the possibility of portraiture in a situation where the subject does not exist. Marge Monko takes a medium-critical approach, examining the ways in which works of art are reproduced and mediated. Tõnis Saadoja is fascinated by Köler’s painting technique and work process, while Johanna Ulfsak demonstrates how to translate a painting onto fabric.

The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Rüki Gallery.
