Kristi Kongi’s solo exhibition Chromatic Drift

Kristi Kongi’s solo exhibition Chromatic Drift has become the most popular exhibition of the Kumu Art Museum’s anniversary year. The exhibition, which ran from 22 May to 11 October, attracted 50,000 visitors.

Until now, the record for the highest number of visitors to a solo exhibition by an Estonian artist at Kumu was held by Enn Põldroos’s retrospective, which attracted around 40,000 people to the museum. Kristi Kongi: Chromatic Drift is also significant for Estonian contemporary art, demonstrating that a local artist’s new work can appeal to a very wide audience. This was Kongi’s most ambitious solo exhibition to date, with all of the works created over the last couple of years in preparation for the exhibition in Kumu’s Great Hall.

“Kristi Kongi’s exhibition brought together an extraordinary spatial experience, new works and a lively programme of events with the artist. The success of the exhibition cannot be measured solely by visitor numbers, but 50,000 people is a telling sign that contemporary art holds the public’s interest and inspires a desire to engage with art. Estonian art, with its strong female artists, is of a very high standard, and the role of Kumu’s large-scale solo exhibition format is to make this visible and to empower it,” said Kadi Polli, Director of the Kumu Art Museum.

One of the key strengths of Chromatic Drift was the opportunity to meet the artist. Kristi Kongi led guided tours and discussions and ran painting workshops, introducing her work to nearly 1,000 visitors. A total of 117 public events took place during the exhibition, attended by 2,200 people, including both first-time visitors to Kumu and those who viewed the exhibition several times.

The next solo exhibition by an Estonian artist in the Kumu Art Museum’s programme is Aili Vint’s In the Glow (curated by Maria Arusoo), which opens on 16 April 2027.
