The Night of Museums “Time in the Night”

During the Long Night of Museums on Saturday, 29 August, from 6 to 11 pm,* the Kumu Art Museum welcomes visitors to free exhibitions – the permanent display of Estonian art “Treasury” and “Conflicts and Adaptations” and the temporary display: “Ando Keskküla. Reality and Technodelics”.

The theme for the Night of Museums 2020 is “Time in the Night”, it invites us to explore time and its meaning for us in our culture, society, nature etc.

Great Hall

“Reality and Technodelics” is Ando Keskküla’s (1950–2008) retrospective solo exhibition, and consists of his works from the most active period of his creative career, i.e. from the end of the 1960s to the end of the 1990s. Throughout his life, Keskküla showed an interest in new technologies, primarily in the way technology changes and transforms our perception and reality. His happenings, drawings, paintings, animations and interactive (video) installations are characterised by such antitheses as natural vs technological, utopian vs dystopian, and psychedelic vs real.

3rd floor

The permanent display of Estonian art at the Kumu Art Museum has been divided in two. The third-floor exhibition “Treasury” gives the visitors a chance to enjoy the classics of Estonian art from the 18th century until the end of World War II. The exhibition provides an overview of the most important masters in Estonian art history, such as Johann Köler, Kristjan Raud, Konrad Mägi, Ants Laikmaa and Nikolai Triik.

4th floor

On the fourth floor of the Kumu Art Museum, we welcome visitors to the permanent display, “Conflicts and Adaptations. Estonian Art of the Soviet Era (1940–1991)”. The exhibition is one possible way of looking at the art from the mid-20th century onwards, the major factors being the conflicts with and adaptations to the new political regime after World War II.

Programme:

6–10 pm “Time Walking”: independent orienteering in the Kumu courtyard.
6:30–10 pm visitors can participate in creative workshops in the Kumu Education Centre.
6:30–10.15 pm “Pearls from the Kumu Collections”: Kumu will talk about different works of art on display, which are related to the umbrella theme of time.

In Estonian: at 7, and 9 pm
In Russian: at 6.30 and 8.30 pm
In English: 9.15 pm

The following exhibitions will be closed during the Long Night of Museums: “Ado Vabbe. Wunderbar” on the 3rd floor wing B, “The Future is in One Hour: Estonian Art in the 1990s” on the 4th floor wing B and “State of Emergency. Flo Kasearu” in the gallery of contemporary art on the 5th floor.

The Reval Café at Kumu will also be open until late at night and they have special offers for visitors of the Long Night of Museums.
