Opening programme of the “Futuromarennia: Ukraine and Avant-Garde exhibition”
The opening programme of the new exhibition Futuromarennia: Ukraine and Avant-Garde will take place at the Kumu Art Museum, including the following public events:
1 pm to 3 pm: Futu-Fashion workshop for teenagers and adults
2 pm to 4 pm: Drop-in Games with Future Blocks workshop for children and families
2 pm: curator’s tour of the exhibition in English by Ihor Oksametnyi
3 pm: curator’s tour of the exhibition in Ukrainian by Olha Melnyk (with translation to English)
4 pm: tour of the exhibition in Estonian by Elnara Taidre
Janek Murd will perform music inspired by Ukraine in Kumu’s atrium.
The Futuromarennia: Ukraine and Avant-Garde exhibition provides revealing insight into Ukrainian avant-garde art, which aspired to modernise society. Radical dreams of the future found moving expression in painting, stage design, architecture, literature and cinema. The works of Oleksandra Ekster, Davyd Burliuk and Vasyl Yermylov come from museums that have continued working, even under constant Russian attacks. The exhibition lays the groundwork for a critical post-colonial reassessment of the history of both the Western and Russian avant-garde, highlighting the numerous aspects of Ukrainian artistic life and its connections with international developments during the first decades of the 20th century.
