New kintsugi
Repair of ceramic objects using the new kintsugi technique.
Instructor Marta Konovalova
In this pre-holiday workshop, we will repair a broken ceramic, porcelain or glass item using the Japanese technique of kintsugi, or visible repair, but with a modern twist. We will be using gold synthetic resins, which are best for learning the technique.
During the practical work, we will talk about the philosophy of mending and wabi sabi. You will take away from the workshop instructions on how to practice visible mending on your own later.
During the workshop, you will be able to repair one simple item using the new kintsugi technique (the complexity depends on the number of shards: two to five shards are recommended). If possible, participants are asked to bring an object to be repaired; the tools will be available on site.
The instructor Marta Konovalova is a designer and creative researcher opposed to the idea of disposability; she dedicated her PhD thesis to this topic at the Estonian Academy of Arts, Faculty of Design. She is an enthusiast of repair and reuse and her work focuses on zero-cost fashion and accessory design.
