Kumu 17!

Art or science? Come to Kumu’s birthday and find out!

Join us for the Kumu Art Museum’s anniversary celebrations from 17 to 19 February.
This year the special anniversary programme centres around the exhibition Art or Science, which explores the relationship between art and science in Estonia from a historical perspective.

The connections between art and science are attracting increasingly more attention, as shown by several research and exhibition projects worldwide. The historical links between the two worlds, however, seem largely neglected. The exhibition Art or Science focuses on visualisation in the natural and medical sciences in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition has been organised in collaboration between the University of Tartu Museum, the Art Museum of Estonia and the Estonian Academy of Arts. It shows objects from the University of Tartu collections and other Estonian science and memory institutions. It highlights scientific illustrators, who have too often been overshadowed by “real” artists and scientists. The exhibition also features a contemporary contribution by the artist Kristina Norman.

  • On Friday, 17 February free admission to all 17-year-olds (photo ID required)
  • From Friday, 17 February to Sunday, 19 February, museum tickets are available for a special price of 7 euros (including admission to events).
  • Kumu Art Museum annual card holders can bring a friend along for free!
  • There are many special offers in the museum shop!
