Guided Tour of the Latin American Art Exhibition
As a part of the finissage of Kumu’s Great Hall exhibition “History and Mystery: Latin American Art and Europe”, the coordinator of the exhibition, Inga Jaagus, will lead a guided exhibition tour in English.
This is the first major exhibition of Latin American art in Estonia. The exhibition presents a large number of masterpieces from the collection of The Phoebus Foundation, an art foundation based in Antwerpen, to whom belongs one of the most significant Latin American art collections in Europe.
The exhibition focuses on relations in art between Latin America and Europe. In the colonial period, art was a powerful medium to spread Christianity and justify the social hierarchies imposed by the Spanish colonial rule. In the 20th century, a different relationship emerged, when contacts between artists developed in Paris, Madrid and other European art centres, and with European exile artists in Latin America. In both colonial art and 20th century modernist art, the European influences merged with local indigenous cultures, resulting in a unique Latin American visual language.
The exhibition features some of the most renowned Latin American artists, including Diego Rivera, Joaquín Torres-García, Roberto Matta, Julio Alpuy, Antonio Berni, as well Libero Badii and Wifredo Lam, both of whom were widely celebrated at this year’s Venice Biennale. The exhibition showcases a total of one hundred works, with the most imposing pieces being product sculptures reaching 3 meters in height. This event is a part of the public programme of Kumu’s international Great Hall exhibition “History and Mystery: Latin American Art and Europe”.
