Expressive Etching

The course will be held in Estonian, but English translation is possible.

In this two-part printmaking course, you will learn to etch a printing plate and to use it for printmaking. Etching is an intaglio technique in which a plate is covered in an acid-resistant ground, into which an image is scratched with an etching needle. The plate with the image is then dipped into an acid bath so that the scratched lines are etched into the metal. The etching technique can be used in stages, meaning that the lines etched longer will be stronger and wider. The finished printing plate is covered in ink, which gets stuck in the etched grooves. A printing press is then used to transfer the image from the metal plate to paper.

The instructor, Kadri Toom, is a freelance artist and a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association and the Association of Estonian Printmakers. She teaches printmaking courses at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences.

On the days of the course, the participants can visit the exhibitions free of charge.
