Jugend debattiert international is a debate competition in German to promote Central and Eastern European youth’s ability to think critically about political and social topics and to present views in a competent and convincing manner. In addition to supporting the study of the German language and active multilingualism in Europe, the idea is to promote good political culture and debating skills as a democratic method of conflict resolution.
In 2019, Jugend debattiert international will take place in a total of twelve Central and Eastern European countries. Estonia has participated since 2006. Over the years, more than 25,000 students have taken part in the competition.
The project is carried out in collaboration between the Goethe-Institut, the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future, the non-profit Hertie Foundation and the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad.
