In connection with the Kumu Art Museum’s exhibition Symmetrical Worlds – Mirrored Symmetries. Ülo Sooster, Juri Sobolev, Tõnis Vint, Raul Meel, Kumu and the Institute of Art History and Visual Culture of the Estonian Academy of Arts will jointly hold a workshop dedicated to the influences of surrealism and abstract art in the unofficial art of the Soviet Union in the 1950s–1970s. We ask what the role and transmutation of surrealism was in the art scene in those days, and how it was tied to post-war innovations in art in Central and Western Europe; we also look at the spread of surrealistic imagery into various mainstream media in those years.
